A few months ago a family discussion sparked an idea... A little trip north to enjoy the sun, surf and serenity together. Before we knew it, the destination was chosen and the airfares given. Byron Bay we were on our way.
Each word of advice or opinion stated that Byron was the place for me. Loved ones, friends and strangers alike ensured I would be in my element. This self professed hippy is proud to say, each person was so so beyond correct. The calm vibrations of the waves, the near complete lack of shoes, the beautiful endless beaches, the light house hike, the overwhelming amount of vegan eateries, the slow pace of life, the tropical rain, the rolling rainforest hills and the scatter of crystals throughout the region all filled my soul.
We began at Sydney airport. I was beyond thrilled to be able to travel again with my family by my side and excitement was at an all time high as... This family vacation was all the sweeter with a special addition on board. Button Benjo-Young bump, my future niece or nephew nestled safely listening to our muffled excitement. I'm going to be an Aunty!
The five and a half of us headed north, soared into the Gold Coast and picked up our rental car for the next 4 days. We swiftly drove to Byron Bay and were meet with the most beautiful bungalow/treehouse accommodation. I felt as though this place was made for me. Natural and ecological, calming and luxurious, tropical and intimate. The beautiful arcs and angles of the bungalow stood in start contrast to the luscious ferns, palms and glistening crystals dotted about the property. Backing onto the beach, the sound of the waves softly crashing on the shore trickled gently into our windows.
Over the next three days we soaked up each element of Byron. We trekked to the lighthouse, enjoyed delicious vegan treats and restaurants. The melting pot of cultures in Byron surprised but delighted me. I enjoyed observing the eclectic mix of hippy, luxury, surf and tourist cultures. We hiked to Australia's most easterly point and the striking white light house perched upon the hill with a vibrant blue backdrop. The strenuous hike was worth it with a refreshing dip in the silky temperate water at The Pass along our descent.
On day two we ventured up to Crystal Castle an inspiring and sacred property tucked between the rolling hills and tropical mist. My high expectations were immediately exceeded. I adored the the glistening crystals, soul touching meditations, aura readings and its inexplicable sense of belonging and comfort. The presence of my mum, sister, Nice/nephew bump) and a lovely dear friend made the day so special. The pouring rain didn't stop us enjoying the magic, rather it added to the pure and cleansing atmosphere. Sadly, Dad and Tobe's surfing adventure was not so rain adaptable. However, when I think back to this day the first thing that comes to mind is an effortless sense of happiness and calm. No rushing, no worries, no anxieties. Simply happiness. Crystal Castle really is a place of healing and mystic.
Throughout our mini holiday we pottered, ate and meandered our way around Byron Bay. We got pampered, soaked, inspired and nourished.
Sadly the time came to leave Byron. Luckily our holiday wasn't over yet as we headed to the Gold Coast. Byron's calm and serene nature was juxtaposed with grey concrete, immense high-rises, the buzz of an epic timezone and a rush of people. From our apartment people below moved about their lives like small ants.
Our view was stunning as the sun began to shine and the game faces emerged. Oh did I mention the Canberra Raiders happened to be playing the exact same day we arrived on the Gold Coast at the Gold Coast?! Well this 'coincidence' was carefully planned by my brother. I believe this was the most essential element of this family holiday coming to fruition. Covered in Lime Green, we ventured to the stadium to watch the Raiders.... oh dear... We trudged our sad lime green bodies back into town... Round one didn't go well. Regardless of this tragic blow, the world kept turing, the sun rose the next morning and life continued. My bleary eyes bathed in the warm early morning light as i watched the sun slide above the horizon. A morning at the broadness of broad beach and few games of epic putt putt later we headed to the airport ready to make our way home to Sydney.
Our holiday while short, filled a very special spot in my soul. The gratitude I feel for being given the gift of experiencing such beauty and calmness with my family is immense. Each moment I will cherish and keep vividly in my mind, I am immeasurably appreciative.
The soothing sound of rain drops on the bungalow's tin roof. The smell of overflowing frangipani trees. The taste of ludicrously delicious vegan treats. The smooth yet jagged texture of glistening, healing amethyst crystals. The sight of my family gathered together overlooking the ocean under the palm tree arc. All are forever etched in my memory.
Byron Bay, see you again one day. Peace and Love The Little (Aunty) Earthling. #familyvacation #buttondoesbyron #gratitude #universe #healing
